Michael Ferguson was appointed Auditor General of Canada on 28 November 2011.

Prior to his appointment, he served as the Deputy Minister of Finance of New Brunswick and Secretary to the Board of Management for the Province of New Brunswick from 2010 to 2011.

Mr. Ferguson began his career as an Auditor with New Brunswick’s Office of the Comptroller in 1985. He held the position of Comptroller from 2000 to 2005 and was Auditor General of New Brunswick from 2005 to 2010.

He has been an active member of the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants since 2005, serving as Council Member (2005–2007), Secretary-Treasurer (2007–2008), Vice-President (2008–2009), and President (2009–2010). He is in his third three-year term as a member of the Public Sector Accounting Board of The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA). In 2009–2010, Mr. Ferguson served on the CICA Council of Presidents. He has participated in several task forces and has also worked with the Canadian Comprehensive Audit Foundation to build performance audit capacity in the National Audit Office of Tanzania.

Mr. Ferguson holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Brunswick and became a Chartered Accountant in 1984. He was elected to the Fellowship of the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2011.
