Sustaining Canada’s Major Fish Stocks—Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Video Transcript

In this audit, we were trying to make sure that of the 154 stocks of fish that Canada has that are economically important, that none of them would have the same type of outcome as the collapse of the cod that we had in the 1990s. So in this audit, we looked at what work the department of Fisheries and Oceans was doing to ensure that we would not have another collapse of a fish stock, and what we found were that there are 15 stocks of fish that are considered to be in a critical zone in terms of the health of the stock. Twelve of those stocks do not have rebuilding plans. So, from my perspective, we are still at risk of having another stock potentially go into collapse, similar to what happened to the cod.
