Media Advisory—Tabling of the 2022 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development—Tuesday, 4 October 2022

Ottawa, 15 September 2022—The 2022 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development will be tabled in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 4 October 2022, at approximately 10:00 am (eastern daylight timeEDT).

The 2022 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development are as follows:

Report 6—Management of Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste. This audit focused on whether Natural Resources Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited adequately managed low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste.

Report 7—Protecting Aquatic Species at Risk. This audit focused on whether Fisheries and Oceans Canada, in collaboration with others, protected selected aquatic species assessed as at risk.

Report 8—Review of the 2021 Progress Report on the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. This review of the 2021 Progress Report on the 2019 to 2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy includes an assessment of the fairness of the information used to track progress against targets, contextual indicators, short-term milestones, and key priorities that are contained in the progress report and are related to the federal strategy’s 13 goals.

Report 9—Departmental Progress in Implementing Sustainable Development Strategies—Species at Risk. This audit assessed the contribution of Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Parks Canada to meeting the target of species at risk under the Healthy Wildlife Populations goal in the 2019 to 2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, and the related United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on land, as applicable to each entity.

Report 10—Environmental Petitions Annual Report. This annual report on petitions informs Parliament and Canadians about the number, nature, and status of environmental petitions and the government’s responses received between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022.

Biodiversity in Canada: Commitments and Trends. This backgrounder provides general information on Canada’s commitments to protect biodiversity. It also addresses species at risk status and trends. It provides a background to the performance audit reports on specific biodiversity topics that the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development plans to release between 2022 and 2024.

The 2022 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development will be available on the Office of the Auditor General of Canada website immediately following tabling.
